California Megan's Law
Named after Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was put into federal law in 1995. Megans Law makes it mandatory for all states
have a system in place for alerting local residents when a sexual offender is relocated into their community.
Megan was only seven years old when a prior sexual predator that resided accross the street from her family, kidnapped,
rapped, and murdered her. It was agreed that if her family or other community members had been aware that a repeated
sexual offender was housed amongst them, this heinous act would have been avoided. With that in mind, the U.S. Congress
enacted the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", aka Megan's Law, without any objections.
Since the law was put into effect, California has made it a point to protect its public by providing the most current information
relevant to past sex offenders and their place of residence. The legislation has confirmed that while sexual assaults are still a
problem in the United States, offenses committed by prior offenders are on a regression.
The information attainable through the passing of Megan's Law has continued to be a major advantage in keeping one's family
shielded from the risk of sexual offenses. Getting updated on information that is related to you an your loved ones is imperative. We are
