California Megan's Law
Named after Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was enacted into federal law in 1995. Megan's Law requires that every state
have a system in place for informing local residents when a sexual offender is moves into their community.
Megan was just seven years old when a repeat sexual offender that lived accross the street from her family, abducted,
violently rapped, and killed her. It was agreed that if her family or other local residents had been aware that a repeated
sexual predator was living amongst them, this crime would have been thwarted. On that train of thought, the U.S. Congress
enacted the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", aka Megan's Law, without any opposition.
Since the law has been put into effect, California has made it a point to protect its supplying the most up to date information
relating to previous sex offenders and their current residency. The law has shown that while sex crimes are still a
problem in the U.S., acts committed by previous offenders are on a regression.
